I’ve spent my college career traveling back and forth between my home in Illinois and school here in South Carolina. I quickly fell in love with these solo twelve-hour road trips, using the time and space to learn about places along my route, catching up with friends on the phone, and overall enjoying the journey, rather than wishing it away. I think that design is like this: deeply investing in a client or project, enjoying the discovery, and taking useful detours.
More than being a practical and flexible career, design, to me, is a way to invest in others, whether that be individual people or entire organizations. I want to bring the most beautiful parts of the world to others in this way by good research and intentional design solutions. A listening ear and a keen eye go a long way.
Looking back, what advice would you give yourself?
I would tell myself that it is important to trust the process of this program. There were many moments I was full of fear and worry, but we have this process for a reason!
What's your favorite A+D memory?
In our sophomore year, we created an exhibition to showcase our bespoke typography. It was the first time I felt that we were unified as a cohort, and all night, we were so stunned and excited that we were able to create the show. It was full of smiles and pride!
What was your favorite A+D class?
History of Graphic Design was a magical experience for me. Going to class every morning to just listen and learn about many pivotal moments in this profession confirmed everything I love about design.
What moment, project, and/or critique in your Art + Design career at AU has been pivotal to who you are as an artist or creator?
When I visited my client for branding, that really showed me the importance of good research and representation. I drove eight hours round-trip to visit a wildlife center in Georgetown, and the people there were so passionate about the legacy of their workplace and sharing that with me. It was so motivating to me, and I realized I could never get enough of an experience like that.
What’s next for you? I am moving to the South Jersey area and searching for jobs at design agencies in Philadelphia, PA!
How do you hope your work makes an impact?
I hope that my work changes the way people see things around them. There is always a deeper story and purpose to be revealed.
