SALTER

I am a  functional ceramic artist, who uses basic shapes and forms to showcase my underglaze paintings of the flora and fauna that give me inspiration.

My work is a physical reflection of my journey deeper into faith by way of slowing down and practicing meditation. Through my functional ceramics, I aim to find ways to incorporate my inner love of the natural world and its beauty into small, everyday moments. In this way, I am making the everyday experiences we take for granted into small rituals. I focus on natural illustrations basic forms to show off my illustrations, giving each item life through color.

I use high fire stoneware, which is fired to cone 10, as well as Amaco and Kiwi underglazes for the illustrations. I throw each piece on the wheel, with an extra thick bottom, then go back and trim the foot. Then, each piece is carefully smoothed and then bisque fired. I do not enjoy working with decoration on wet work, so this is when I paint my work. Bisqueware is still porous, so the paint dries quickly, so I must work quickly. Then, each piece is dipped in a clear glaze and fired in the glaze kiln.

Looking back, what advice would you give yourself?

Slow down, and find the craft that gives you joy, not one that meets expectations of others.

What's your favorite A+D memory?

When I first made a piece of ceramic art that looked good, after a year of trying.

What was your favorite A+D class?

Any ceramics class! I’m especially loving the advanced classes, where I can explore and create more independently.

What moment, project, and/or critique in your Art + Design career at AU has been pivotal to who you are as an artist or creator?

I don’t believe just one can be pinpointed for getting my work to today’s level. Each critique and project has pushed me to be better in different ways, each one needed, and each one different.

What's next for you?

After college I plan to be a full time potter! I currently work with Hollowed Earth Pottery, where I am a studio tech and assistant teacher. My hope is to continue to grow and learn even after graduation.

How do you hope your work makes an impact?

My aim is that each time my work is touched, the user will be reminded to slow down, reflect, and to be mindful of each moment they are given.
