For me, the power of design lies in the fact that it doesn't make you choose. What I believe about design can be summed up in three contradictory statements. (1) My design practice exists at the intersection of chaos and order, and both are equally necessary. (2) Design is about people, for people, and should be done with people. At its core, however, I know that my ability and desire to design comes from something greater: my Creator. (3) My work as a designer is not and cannot be my everything, yet I recognize that elements of design are everywhere. Design is not everything, but it is in everything.
My work is a reflection of these ideals. I am a designer whose process always begins with sensemaking. I love sifting through piles of information and possibilities in pursuit of the best solution. People are at the center of everything I produce, because without them, anything I design would be void. Design, at its deepest level, has taught me this: that in learning to trust the process, I am learning to trust the One who designed me.
Looking back, what advice would you give yourself?
I would tell myself that as cliche as it sounds, you have to trust the process.
What's your favorite A+D memory?
My favorite A+D memory was when it snowed my senior year. A group of us had a sleepover and woke up to the snow coming down on a winter wonderland, made pancakes, and had the perfect snowday!
What was your favorite A+D class?
My favorite class was hands down Brand Identity.
What moment, project, and/or critique in your Art + Design career at AU has been pivotal to who you are as an artist or creator?
I think the most pivotal moment for me was pitching my project for Brand Identity. Having the opportunity to stand in front of professional designers and pitch work that I was proud of, greatly increased my confidence as a designer.
What's next for you?
I am moving to Columbia, SC to spend two years as an intern with the campus ministry, RUF. I hope to continue doing part-time design work alongside that, and go into the design field full time after that.
How do you hope your work makes an impact?
Ultimately, I hope that through my work, I am able to serve people.
